Year 6 Whitby - Monday
Monday 17th November
We visited Hardwick hall in Derbyshire. It was just one of the amazing houses built by Bess of Hardwick - we had learned about her last year when we went to Eyam so it was fantastic to see another of her houses. This one is high on a hill right next to the old hall where she was brought up. It has her initials carved right at the top - huge and proud for all to see and marvel at. This was all done when Elizabeth the first was queen and when women didn't really have any rights or power. She was an amazing women - her descendants are still some of the richest families in England today. Although Hardwick Hall is now owned by the national Trust, her family still own Chatsworth House. We are planning to write (and publish) a book about Bess of Hardwick.
